10 killed in apartment fire in northwest China’s Xinjiang

BEIJING — A fire at an apartment building in the Xinjiang region of northwest China has killed 10 people and injured nine, authorities said on Friday.

The fire broke out on Thursday night in the regional capital Urumqi, where temperatures dropped below freezing after dark. The fire took about three hours to extinguish.

Local authorities said the injured were expected to survive and the cause of the fire was under investigation.

The tragedy comes days after 38 people were killed in a fire at an industrial trading company in central China caused by welding sparks that ignited cotton fabric.

Four people have been detained in the Anyang city fire and local authorities have ordered a comprehensive safety check.

Old infrastructure, poor safety awareness and in some cases government corruption have led to a recent series of fires, explosions and building collapses across China. .
