Marking his return to the Indian team, Ravindra Jadeja went on to be the overall wrecker for the home team, scoring 5 times in 47 runs as India overtook Australia with just 177 runs in the first leg of the Nagpur Test. Although Jadeja’s performance should have been the subject of discussion, it was his decision to put ointment on his fingers that sparked a huge debate on social media. While some experts and ticketing figures from Australia have questioned the actions of Jadeja, the former captain of Australia Michael Clarke feels like things might have been different if the all-around athlete hadn’t had the ball in his hand at the time he applied the cream.

A video was posted on social media, showing Jadeja getting something from his teammates Mohammed Siraj then smeared and rubbed that on his left index finger, which was of interest to the Australian media and some former players. The argument even got the match referee involved, prompting the Indian team’s management to inform him that it was ointment for a sore finger.

Reacting to the controversy, Michael Clarke said on Day One: “He’s bowling so much that he probably got a blister or cut his hand. He should have been there, he should have given the ball to the umpire and stood in front of the umpire while the umpire was putting the ball in his finger.”

“I don’t look at that and think that’s one thing. I just wish he didn’t have the ball in his hand. If he passes the ball to the referee and does so, I don’t think there’s any comment on that. It’s just perception. I don’t think there is anything to it. I could be 100% wrong,” he said on the Big Sports Breakfast, as suggested by Cricket Fox.

It is known that the Australian team did not bring this matter to the match referee. However, it was the Indian team that went on and explained that the all-around athlete only applied ointment to his sore finger.
