Editor’s Note: Every day from now until the first match starts World Cup 2022 On November 20, we will reveal another celebration with World Cup history. The countdown from 101 continues with Roberto Baggio’s solo goal at the 1990 World Cup.

It is every player’s dream to score at a World Cup.

But dribbling past an entire team to score with an incredible solo effort at a home World Cup? No one even thought about doing that.

Yet that is exactly what The Divine Ponytail – aka Azzurri striker Roberto Baggio – did at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico against Czechoslovakia in Italy’s final group stage match at Italia 90.

Toto Schillaci put the hosts ahead in the first half, but Baggio sealed the victory with a 78th minute masterpiece. After a quick pass that dropped him into space, Baggio split the two defenders, shrugged his shoulders, then undressed center back Ernst Aigner before finishing home. Italy went on to finish in third, but that goal was a broader introduction to the world of Baggio, who became a stellar global superstar four years later at USA ’94.
