12 people shot dead in attack on bar in Mexico in gang-ridden state According to Reuters

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Unidentified gunmen opened fire at a bar in the central Mexican city of Irapuato on Saturday night, killing six women and six men, local authorities said. Second mass shooting in Guanajuato state in less than a month.

Three people were injured in the attack south of Irapuato, the city government said in a statement, adding that security officials were trying to track down the attackers.

The motive behind the shooting was not immediately clear. An initial statement by the city put the death toll at 11 people.

Guanajuato, a major manufacturing hub and production site for many of the world’s top automakers, has been rocked in recent years by brutal wars between rival drug cartels.

On September 21, gunmen shot dead 10 people in an attack at a bar in the town of Guanajuato in Tarimoro, about 96 kilometers southeast of Irapuato.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took office in late 2018 pledging to reduce record levels of gang violence in Mexico, but he has struggled to contain the bloodshed.

While homicides have dropped somewhat in 2022, the number during Lopez Obrador’s six-year term is on track to become the highest number in Mexico’s modern history by a significant margin. He has blamed corruption in previous governments for driving lawlessness.
