5G won’t be threat to aircraft in India: Trai

NEW DELHI: Planes flying over India will not face any safety issues as coming 5G mobile servicethe telecommunications regulator Male said, emphasizing that new age technology is “basically safe” for planes domestic.
This assurance comes at a time of growing concern about the safety of planes flying in the US due to concerns about US interference. navigation system when the 5G network starts rolling out across the country. Some flights to the US have been canceled or rescheduled as airlines fear that 5G phone service could pose a risk aircraft toolswhich affects some popular jets such as the Boeing 777.
“India will have no problem. First of all, there is no problem for the aviation industry in India to roll out 5G spectrum,” president Trai PD Vaghela told TOI.
Vaghela said that while the gap between 5G-specific and aircraft-specific spectrum is very small in the US, the same is much wider when it comes to India.

The band for 5G in the US is between 3700-3980MHz, while the in-flight radio altimeter operates in the 42004400MHz band. The distance is only 220MHz, raising concerns about interfering with the aircraft’s navigation system. In India, however, 5G bands run from 3300MHz to 3670MHz, creating a gap of 530MHz with frequencies used by airlines. Vaghela said that although the threats are not present in India, Trai will examine the matter in detail for a specific assessment.
The Indian telecom industry also feels that there are no safety issues for airlines due to 5G. “Most of the concerns here are being driven by fear emerging in America. The reality is that there is no need to panic in India, and it will not have any impact on the current operations on Indian soil,” said SP Kochhar, DG of the Association of Mobile Operators of India, said.
Kochhar said that India’s 5G bands mirror frequencies distributed in markets across Europe, South Korea and Japan. “There have been 5G launches in these markets, and we haven’t seen any cases of interference with the frequency of airlines in these markets. ”
He called the concerns in India a “game changer” as the country’s aviation industry also began to raise concerns following problems in the US.
The auctions for 5G spectrum in India are expected to take place later this year, after which the rollout will take place over the next 1-2 years.
