The US Navy said on Wednesday that a fire broke out on a US aircraft carrier off the coast of California and injured nine sailors before the fire was extinguished.

“On the morning of November 29, 2022, a fire broke out aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln,” the US Navy said in a statement.

It “was quickly identified and extinguished through the crew’s firefighting efforts. Nine sailors on board are believed to have suffered minor injuries and were treated on board,” the statement added. The incident is under investigation.

The fire comes nearly two and a half years after a massive fire aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard injured 21 people and damaged the ship so much that it had to be scrapped.

A sailor was accused of causing that fire, but was acquitted.
