VIJAYAWADA: One day after Election Commission of India (ECI) wrote a letter to YSR Congressseeking clarification on the party’s presidential election, the YSRC leadership on Thursday clarified that the party will have an election for the presidency and there will be no concept of a lifetime president.
The party had a plenary meeting in July was elected head and YSRC president YS Jagan Mohan Reddyits president for life. In its letter, the ECI said electing a party chairman for life was anti-democratic. The YSRC leadership stated that Jagan had rejected the party’s resolution and therefore it died a natural death.
The party leadership will respond to the ECI, saying that Jagan is not elected president for life. General Secretary Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy said the YSRC had proposed to elect Jagan as the party’s lifelong chairman in February 2022. He said the party cadre wanted Jagan to be the permanent chairman of the party. “It is our wish and intention to have Jagan as president for life. However, the proposal died naturally because Jagan rejected it,” he stated.
Ramakrishna Reddy said, at the plenary session, the party changed the constitution with a 5-year term for the party’s president. However, he said, the resolutions adopted at the plenary session were not sent to the ECI.
“We have not formally sent resolutions to the ECI,” he said, expressing surprise at the exploratory panel’s letter. Ramakrishna Reddy said: “We do not know who sent information about our party’s activities to the ECI.
