Air India will reduce Colombo flights ‘due to poor loads’

NEW DELHI: Air India will reduce frequency Sri Lanka flights, with the need to travel to Sri Lanka do some quick shopping due to the economic crisis and the imposition of a state of emergency there. AI has 16 weekly flights between different Indian cities and Colombo. This will be reduced to 13 starting Friday (March 8) when daily Delhi-Colombo-Delhi the flight will become a four-way weekly flight. An AI spokesperson said: “Flights are reduced due to poor payloads.
“Delhi-Colombo (AI 283) will be active on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Sundays) from April 8 to May 30, 2022. And the fight back (AI 284) will work operating Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from April 9 to May 31, 2022,” the official said.
Other Indian airlines will call for a frequency correction of their Sri Lankan flights this week as demand has plummeted.
“We are seeing lower bookings to Colombo due to the ongoing crisis. We are continuously monitoring the impact and can take appropriate action to adjust capacity based on demand and the situation in Sri Lanka,” an IndiGo spokesperson said on Saturday.
“We are still operating but the load is decreasing,” said an official with another leading Indian carrier. A decision to suspend/reduce flights will be made early this week.”
Over the past few years, the island’s airline – Sri Lankan – has emerged as one of the largest international airlines in India in terms of number of flights. A significant number of Indian tourists fly Sri Lanka to transit through Colombo. In fact, the DGCA-approved summer-2022 schedule shows Sri Lanka’s 128 weekly flights to and from India second only to 170 of the Emirates – International airlines have the maximum number of flights here. A Sri Lankan official said ATF supplies at Colombo Airport had not been affected. “All flights are on schedule. Tourists are going,” she said.
