UN Secretary-General issues stark warning about future: 'Our world is in danger and crippled'

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres delivered a somber assessment of global affairs Tuesday in his opening remarks to the annual high-level meeting in New York City.

“Our world is in danger and crippled,” Guterres told world leaders attending the 77th United Nations General Assembly, returning this week for the first time in three years.

“We are stuck in a huge global dysfunction,” he said, adding that the international community is “not ready or ready to tackle” the challenges it faces. – including climate change, poverty and war.

“The UN Charter and the ideals it stands for are at stake and we have a duty to act,” Guterres added.
