Art Studio – A Beautiful Mess

When we moved into our unrenovated 1990s home, we embarked on a year-long journey to update the look and feel of each room.

I immediately envisioned turning this dreary office into a colorful art studio that I could share with my two kids.

See my other rooms here:

This room gives me incredible pleasure! Ever since I was young and broke, living in a loft apartment, I’ve always found a way to bring an art studio into my space.

In some of my first apartments, I didn’t have a living room to put all of my art supplies. Priority, right?

Now that I have two art-loving young children, I am happy to share this space and create memories together. (My dress is from Sezane)

Before + After

Here is a photo of what the room looked like when we bought our home… and what it looks like today! We were able to take the base of existing cabinets and build on them to bring the shelves to the ceiling.

We removed the trim and reinstalled it for a professional built-in look. And then we Paint cabinets with this method and then paint the wall accordingly.

I found this little easel at a real estate sale and I found it chandeliers on Amazon. In this room, I keep all my acrylic paints, painting supplies, and all my ceramics.

In the photo above you can see my clay bags hidden under my desk. It’s a magical creative space. The best part is that me and my kids use the same space.

It creates a lot of mess, but it’s totally worth it. (Resist the urge to insert “That was a nice message” haha).

I spent a lot of time mixing and repainting the paints into squeeze bottle. A lot of people have asked me if it’s for aesthetic or functional reasons. Honestly, it’s a lot of both.

I find them very practical to use and they are also much nicer than the handmade paint bottles.

I collect more beautiful acrylic paints (and oil paints). My favorite brand for fancy acrylics is Yellow and Color Nova.

They are expensive, however, and I really enjoy using craft paint for a large number of projects that we use as supplies. Childhood magic and art with my kids.

My package station is really my pride and joy! I’ve spent my ALL adult life just wishing for such a perfect little gift wrap. I love it very much. You can also see that my finished ceramics and glazes are stored here.

This is all that’s left of me background image. Honestly, I just love it as a decoration. The textures together make my eyes so happy!

If you have any questions about creating your own art studio or the supplies I use, I’d love to chat in the comments. xx- Elsie
