KANPUR: A 35-year-old woman allegedly threw acid in front of her 40-year-old husband in Kanpur’s Cooperative area just because he asked her why he came home at night. The husband, Dabbu Gupta, suffered severe burns all over his face. His wifePoonam, was captured and sent to jail late sunday.
In a viral video, Gupta was seen recounting his ordeal to the media at the police station headquarters. He testified that when he asked his wife why she was late coming home, she replied that it was none of his business. Shortly after, he claimed, a fight broke out between them after which she threw acid in his face. While demanding Poonam’s imprisonment, Gupta also searches for better treatment facilities in the video.
According to Gupta, Poonam returned home around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, police said. “When he asked her, she started arguing with him. Later, when she assaulted him, Gupta also hit her. However, this angered Poonam, who chose go up a bottle of acid left in the bathroom and splashed him in the face,” a policeman said.
When the police questioned the locals, they allege that Gupta was an alcoholic. “They say that he often quarrels with his wife. It seems his wife took such an extreme step after worrying about his drinking habits,” a police source said.
