Islamabad, Pakistan – At least 20 people have been killed in a road accident in Pakistan after a bus collided with an oil tanker in southern Pakistan.

Officials said the crash happened early Tuesday morning on a highway in Punjab province when the bus hit the tanker from behind.

The bus, carrying 24 passengers and two crew members, was headed to Karachi from Lahore. Police said the tanker truck driver fled on the spot.

Authorities said some of the bodies were badly burned and difficult to identify, adding that they would begin DNA testing to do so.

At least six survivors were seriously injured in the tragedy and transported to Multan’s Nishtar Hospital, officials said.

Investigating officer Kashif Shahzad said a first information report (FIR) has been registered by the police regarding the accident.

He told Al Jazeera: “It is very possible that a case of reckless driving by the bus driver also died.

Asad Shabbir, a spokesman for the National Highway and Highway Police, said the tank truck was carrying thousands of liters of oil.

He said: “The fire after the collision was so great that it was difficult for rescuers to pull the dead and injured out.

The accident caused the highway to be temporarily closed.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif tweeted condolences. “Grieve over the loss of 20 precious lives in the accident. My prayers are with the bereaved family,” he posted.

Punjab Governor Parvez Elahi also expressed grief and asked officials to extend full support to grieving families.

Fatal road accidents are common in Pakistan, with many due to poor quality infrastructure, inappropriate vehicles and people not following traffic rules.

Figures compiled by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics show that in 2021 alone, the country had 10,379 road accidents resulting in 4,566 deaths.
