WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Joe Biden on Monday praised the importance of the U.S. trucking industry, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic as the administration has worked to boost the number of truckers. by attracting more women and veterans.

The White House has advertised an increase in truck driver hiring and commercial driver licenses being issued. It said 100 major employers in recent months have launched apprenticeship programs to help train new drivers.

Mr. Biden said US agencies and companies are doing more to attract women to drive, but said more needs to be done to improve trucking.

Biden called for change “so that we can attract more Americans to work with higher wages, reduce wait times and improve safety, etc.”

The White House encourages actions that are underway to make it easier for truck drivers, including making it easier to find parking and doing more to increase workplace safety and workers’ rights to drivers.

Biden, along with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, outlined efforts to address longstanding weaknesses stemming from workforce challenges in the trucking industry.

The moves are part of a year-long effort to tighten US supply chains in the face of climate shocks and geopolitical tensions, to ensure that China or other countries cannot weapon commodity supply.

Biden has focused on rebuilding the U.S. supply chain following severe shortages of personal protective equipment, including masks and gloves, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and shortages of the substance. Semiconductors made cars more expensive and pushed inflation to a 40-year high.

Biden, speaking in front of three large trucks on the White House lawn, noted that truckers carry about 70 percent of all goods in the United States. He notes that the average trucker’s salary has fallen by nearly 30% in inflation-adjusted dollars since 1978.

“In this iconic American industry, it’s getting harder and harder to raise a family with dignity and pride,” Biden said.

Some carriers have to replace 90 percent of workers each year, White House figures show. “It’s not surprising that so many drivers quit,” Biden said.

The American Trucking Association said last week that long-distance truck drivers’ weekly earnings have increased by more than 25% since the start of 2019.

The statement said the plan to increase the number of truck drivers, launched in 2021, has increased hiring, with more commercial driver licenses available in the first two months of this year than during the period. respectively of last year, the statement said.
