Counttheheadlight has emerged as a contender for Melbourne’s richest underage race, Blue diamond shares after his debut win at The Valley.
The son of I Am Invincible coached by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace raced for pace before going on to score a comfortable win in the Dominating Cleaning Solutions Handicap on Saturday.
Ridden by Ben Allen, Counttheheadlights ($4.80) scores 1¼ the length from Sumatra ($5) with favorite $1.80 Eros heavily supported in third place .
Eustace credits him with performing Counttheheadlight, describing him as a professional.
“He jumped, he traveled, picked up when Ben asked, finished well and strong and beat a horse that started and ran well,” Eustace said.
The Group 1 Blue diamond shares (1200m) in Caulfield February 26 is a race that Maher and Eustace have in mind for the Counttheheadlight.
Before that, however, Counttheheadlights will be aiming for Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) at Caulfield on February 12th.
“Honestly, it was a great show,” Eustace said.
“Three weeks after entering 1100 (meters) at Caulfield, let him go around there then two weeks into Diamond, as long as he pulls up.
“He’s a big, solid, very strong horse and there’s a lot of conditioning on him, so you’d expect him to do a good job and he’ll get there everything will be fine.”
Allen was instrumental in educating the Counttheheadlights by riding the pony in the trials leading up to Saturday’s debut.
“He’s just the kind of loose nature that doesn’t want to overdo things and he’s still intact,” Allen said.
“On the second test, he was a bit plain, and I was a bit disappointed, but he didn’t blink and he just did what he had to do as you see today.”
