Residents at a South Auckland home called police last Thursday after making the macabre discovery, police official Tofilau Faamanuia Vaaelua confirmed.

Police do not believe the family is involved in the suspected murder.

Vaaelua added: “The priority for the police is to confirm the identity of the deceased so we can establish the full circumstances behind the discovery.

Police said an autopsy was underway and forensic investigators were trying to determine the number of victims.

Auctioning abandoned assets is a common practice for hosts with unpaid bills.

The owner of a storage unit in Papatoetoe, South Auckland, told Stuff news site the business is cooperating with police in relation to the investigation.

Newshub media reported that police may be processing the remains of many bodies.

Vaaelua added that police believe there is “no immediate risk to the public related to this incident”.
