Discord servers of popular NFT projects, including Bored Ape . Yacht Club, was targeted by scammers in the early hours of April Fools’ Day. Some users said they lost money because bad guys hacked the bots of projects to post fake offers with links to their scam websites, Motherboard report. One of the phishing posts by a compromised Bored Ape bot reads: “Oh no, our dogs are mutating. MAKC can be wagered for our $APE tokens. MAYC + BAYC holders will be able to claim exclusive rewards simply by minting and holding our mutant dogs.”
If a user clicks on the link in the post, they will be taken to a website where they are tricked into creating a fake NFT in exchange for Ethereum. Other versions trick victims into sending NFTs to scammers by making them think their collection is about to be repackaged. Two wallet addresses were involved in the hack, one of which sold the stolen Mutant Ape Yacht Club NFT and then sent another 19.85 ETH, or about $69,000 based on the exchange rate present. The recipient’s wallet reportedly sent 61 ETH ($213,000) to a mixing service, which could obscure the origin and trace of potentially identifiable cryptocurrencies.
It’s unclear how many people fell victim to this scam, but the projects’ administrations quickly caught on and posted warnings for their fans. Bored Ape request users don’t mine anything from its Discord, and clarified that it doesn’t do “any April Fools’ stealth mints.” Nyoki Cub posted a similar warning and admits that “its server has also been compromised … due to a recent large-scale hack.” It said they were able to get the situation under control within 30 minutes.
NFTs are slowly gaining popularity, with big-name celebrities like Justin Bieber and Madonna bringing attention to digital collections. Such plans are bound to become more as long as people keep pouring money into non-fungible tokens.
