Canelo vs. Golovkin III at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on September 17

Via Dan Ambrose: Matchroom Boxing has just confirmed a trio match between undisputed super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin on September 17 will be held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The first two fights between Canelo and Golovkin were held at T-Mobile, and both controversial results left boxing fans unsatisfied with the results. Even many of Canelo’s fans were unhappy with the way the referees graded the matches, it seemed that Golovkin had won.

Last May, Canelo lost to WBA Heavyweight Champion Dmitry Bivol by a unanimous decision over 12 rounds at T-Mobile Arena, with three referees spinning the identical score 115-113 in a match that many boxing fans felt was a huge win for champion.

Given the controversy surrounding the first two games between Canelo and Golovkin, aside from scoring in Alvarez’s recent game against Bivol at T-Mobile, it would have been better if the competition had been held at a different venue.

Given the history behind those three fights, Canelo should have opted to book the trilogy against Golovkin in Southern California or New York.

Having a match against Canelo-GGG Tuesday at T-Mobile wouldn’t be a big deal if the outcome were a decider with a knockout or a loser decision, but it’s unlikely. Canelo didn’t throw enough punches to knock Golovkin down, and similarly, GGG won’t KO the granite-chinned Mexican star.

Canelo wisely waited four years from his last match against 36-year-old Golovkin before finally choosing to face him again and stand a better chance of beating him without controversy. .

The 40-year-old Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) has only fought four times since his loss to Canelo in 2018, and he hasn’t looked sharp, especially in his final bout in September. Fourth with 160-lb WBA champion Ryota Murata.

The money from T-Mobile must have been worth it for Canelo to continue staging battles there.

That is the only explanation that this writer can find as to why Canelo continues to return to his former position despite the criticism he receives for the goal.

Canelo has nothing to do with the way the referees score his matches, but what bothers him is that some fans think the referees are giving him points that the fans disagree with.
