CBI nabs joint drug controller in bribery case | India News

NEW DELHI: CBI on Monday arrested generic drug controller S Eswara Reddy for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 4 lakh to abandon a phase three clinical trial of Insulin Aspart injection, an underdeveloped product of Bioconofficials said.
After receiving input on the bribery exchange, the CBI registered a case criminal conspiracy and corruption against Reddy, posted at CDSCO headquarters, and Dinesh Dua, director at Synergy Network India Private Limited, among others.
CBI, working on input for over a month, did a raid and Dua was caught giving a bribe of Rs 4 lakh to Reddy out of a promised sum of Rs 9 lakh on behalf of Biocon Biologics, a subsidiary of Biocon led by Kiran Majumder Shaw, officials said.
“Phase 3 clinical trials are an important regulatory mechanism for assessing the safety of a pharmaceutical products. Any attempt to abandon them could have serious public health and safety consequences, one official said.
