Boston Celtics Head coach Ime Udoka has been suspended for the duration of the 2022-23 season, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
Udoka violation, according to The Athletichad an “unwarranted and consensual relationship” with a female Celtics employee.
It is reported that Udoka is considering resigning, but according to Chris B. Haynes of Yahoo, Udoka will instead accept the suspension.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, Udoka’s work status will be reevaluated after the suspension ends.
Udoka – who led the Celtics to the NBA Finals in his first season as the team’s head coach – is not in danger of losing his job, but an official announcement about the expected length of suspension soon on Thursday. If Udoka is not on the Boston bench to start the season, assistant coach Joe Mazzulla is arguably the leading candidate to replace him on an interim basis.
This isn’t the first time an NBA team has had a reported affair scandal that led to uncertainty. Nearly a year ago to now, the Minnesota Timberwolves parted ways with their basketball executive president, Gersson Rosas, in part due to “a consensual and intimate relationship” he was with a member of the organization when he was married. Rosas joined the team in 2019.
Udoka, 45, has been engaged to actress Nia Long since 2015.
