China’s foreign ministry said the US decision to shoot down a balloon that Beijing claimed went astray had “severe and damaging impact” on relations between the two countries.
“The actions of the United States have seriously affected and damaged both sides’ efforts and progress in stabilizing Sino-US relations since the Bali meeting,” said Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng. said, according to a State Department statement, referring to the summit between presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping in November.
