Crown Prince Hamzah bin Hussein of Jordan relinquishes title | News

Prince Hamzah said he made the decision because his beliefs could not be reconciled with ‘the approaches, policies and methods of our institutions’.

An outspoken half-brother of the king of Jordan has given up his precious title.

Prince Hamzah bin Hussein posted the announcement on its official Twitter account on Sunday.

He wrote that he was driven to the decision because his beliefs could not be reconciled with “the current approaches, policies and methods of our institutions”.

This is the latest chapter in an ongoing palace feud that saw the junior royal put under house arrest a year ago.

He did not directly criticize King Abdullah II and the ruling elite, as he has in the past, but his tone signaled that the rift was not yet healed, as the Hashemite Royal Court had suggested. before.

The Hashemite Royal Court was not immediately available for comment.

Abdullah and Hamzah are the sons of King Hussein, who ruled Jordan for nearly half a century before his death in 1999. Abdullah appointed Hamzah crown prince upon his succession but stripped him of his title in 2004. .

The monarch put Hamzah under house arrest last April for allegedly plotting to destabilize the allied Western kingdom.

In a video statement at the time, Hamzah denied the allegations, saying he was being punished for speaking out against official corruption.

Last month, Hamzah apologized to his brother, according to a letter released at the time by the Hashemite Royal Court. Hamzah went on to express hope that “we can turn this page in the history of our country and our families.”

Analyst Amer Sabaileh said he expected Hamzah’s announcement to rekindle a royal rift that many in Jordan believed was resolved with the prince’s apology.

Sabaileh noted that Hamzah unilaterally took the decision and announced it on his personal Twitter account, rather than consulting with the royal family.

Sabaileh said of Hamzah: “He is trying to reconnect with the old story. “We’re getting back to the point where he’s saying he’s not happy; that he is still bitter and there is no reconciliation”.

It was not immediately clear whether Hamzah’s decision to give up his title would restore his freedom of movement. Hamzah has only appeared in public once since the feud. In February, the court announced the birth of their son Hamzah.

The feud was a rare instance of infighting within the Hashemite royal family that was made public. At one point, Jordan imposed a gag order on reporting on the events, reflecting the sensitivity of the issues surrounding the royal family.

Abdullah accused his brother of seduction but said the dispute was being resolved in the family and Hamzah remained in his own palace under the protection of the king.

Two former senior officials involved in alleged conspiracy was found guilty of anesthesia and sentenced to 15 years in prison by the state security court. Details of the alleged conspiracy have never been made public.
