David Benavidez Says Jermall Charlo Doesn’t Deserve Canelo Fight More Than He

Via Dan Ambrose: David Benavidez feels that he is just as worthy as Jermall Charlo and Caleb Plant to fight against Canelo Alvarez.

Two-time former WBC super-middleweight champion Benavidez (25-0.22 KOs) points out that former IBF 168-lb Plant champion only pitted one notable, Jose Uzcategui. He was paid a big day salary in millions of dollars to play against Canelo last November.

In the case of 14-year-old pro Jermall Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs), he’s only fought four good but not great opponents in his long career, but he’s about to be beaten by Canelo choose for a life – change payday to May 7th.

The best opponents of Jermall Charlo’s career:

  • Cornelius Bundrage
  • Austin Salmon
  • Sergiy Derevyanchenko
  • Julian ‘J-Rock’ Williams

Benavidez says Charlo only fought four notable guys

Even like my beef with [Jermall] Charles. He’s been there for too long and can say what he wants. However, to be honest, he [ONLY] fought with Derevyanchenko and J-Rock [Julian Williams]”David Benavidez said to Fighthype pointed out that Jermall has fought only a handful of notable boxers during his career.

“Okay, like four warriors,” Benavidez said when informed that Charlo had also fought Cornelius Bundradge and Austin Trout. “I’ve been following that guy since I was 13 years old.

“They think they deserve better than they are, and they think they are better than they are. The person I have a lot of respect for is Canelo. He beat a lot of good boxers.

“It’s like when others like Charlo say they’re the best. The same things they said about me, they had to say about him. When do people talk so much about me while everyone else does,” said Benavidez.

Jermall Charlo rose to fame without fighting with quality guys because he made noise before fighting during his press conference. Also, with Charlo being one of the Showtime house warriors they televised regularly, it’s artificially created a fan base.

If Showtime didn’t regularly broadcast Charlo’s matches every time he played, he might not be as popular. Out of sight out of mind.

Given the lackluster mid-lane contrast that Charlo had during his 14-year professional career, he hasn’t fought big names to become a star. But with his fights televised on Showtime, it helped him build a following.

Same thing with Caleb Plant. He hasn’t fought anyone spectacular throughout his career, but he has garnered a huge following thanks to his televised battles on Showtime.

Who did Plant fight to be worthy of fighting Canelo?

“Caleb Plant, who did he fight?” Benavidez said when asked about the talented boxers that Plant beat to get a big payday fight against Canelo.

“He fought Uzcategui and was almost killed in the last three innings. Charlo and all these people. How am I not worth fighting when these guys are like me?

“Yes, these fighters are about to be built a bit. Plants already in it [against Canelo]. He’s got a check. So what’s left is for me to fight Canelo. I think these wars are closer to being made than further away. That’s what I’m saying. I am in a good position.

“He’s already a champion at 168,” Benavidez said of Canelo when asked if he was gaining weight to take advantage of his WBC stripping after failing to defend his title against Roamer Alexis Angulo. in August 2020 or not.

“I don’t want to sit here like a hater and say, ‘Oh, he [Canelo] scared of me. That was the only reason he gave after I lost my belt. ‘ He saw an opportunity to get a belt and went and grabbed it.

“I would do the same,” Benavidez said, sounding cautious as he ripped Canelo for his opportunistic behavior.

Caleb Plant only fought one notable boxer in Jose Uzcategui before fighting Canelo.

The ONLY reason Plant played against Canelo was because he got the 168-lb IBF title he wanted and because he was an easy hitter.

It means; Plant lacks the chin, stamina, and strength to make Canelo avoid him like he is doing with Benavidez.

Benavidez wants Demetrius Andrade to fight

“I want to fight [Demetrius] Andrade too,” Benavidez said. “He is a good fighter.

“It’s just for my own sake to let me experience and be the warrior I want to be and have the legacy I want to have. It was not an easy fight. I will try for it. I’m not afraid of anyone,” Benavidez said.

It could be a long, long time before Benavidez can take on Demetrius Andrade, even though he is gaining weight for the next fight.

Andrade’s management is positioning him to fight against Canelo, which is one of the reasons he moved to 168.

It doesn’t make sense to assume that they want to steer 33-year-old ‘Boot’ Andrade in the direction of a dangerous fight against the much younger, older and stronger 25-year-old Benavidez.

The risk reward isn’t worth them, so potentially, we’ll NEVER see Benavidez get a chance against Andrade.

The only way for the fight to happen is if Benavidez hits superstar status in the next three or four years before Andrade retires.

Given that Benavidez couldn’t get the match he needed against Canelo to become the next superstar, he will probably continue to be known to heavyweight boxing fans. He’s never going to be a big star.

All the big stars like Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Canelo both needed that big name to make them superstars in America

Benavidez is lacking a name to take his career to the next level, and Canelo doesn’t seem interested in helping him in the way that he has been supported by veteran Mayweather stars Shane Mosley , Gennadiy Golovkin and Miguel Cotto.

Benavidez needed to show some flexibility by moving up 175th and cruiser class to make some noise by fighting the top guys in those weight classes for dead 168-lb. I know Canelo is there, but he’s going to fight him.
