BH or Bharat Series plates are for non-cargo vehicles with the aim of making it easier to move around the country.
Bharat serial number plate or BH series was introduced by the central government last year with registration numbers starting from September onwards. The idea behind the BH number plate is to ensure that owners who don’t ship with such plates don’t have to reapply for a new license plate if they move to another state.
This will be extremely helpful for people whose jobs require them to travel frequently to different parts of the country.
Section 47 of the Motor Vehicle Act allows vehicle owners to keep their vehicle in another state for a period not exceeding 12 months. After 12 months, the owner must transfer the vehicle registration back to the new driving or keeping condition. This is where the BH number plate brings ease to the owner as there will be no need to transfer the registration from the parent state to the new one.
One India, one tax, one BH
The BH license plate is valid nationally and allows you to have a hassle-free driving and ownership experience. Owners do not have to pay for a new registration in case they settle in another state. There’s also no hassle of paperwork.
Are you eligible for a BH number plate?
The applicant, quite obviously, must be a genuine citizen of India to apply for a BH number plate. But even then, not everyone can apply for it. The current number plate BH is mainly for people in the field of defense, working with the state or the central government. Those who work with multinational companies can also apply provided the company is present in four or more states in the country.
How to apply for BH number plate?
The process to get a BH number plate is online. When purchasing a new vehicle, the dealer can initiate the process through the Vaahan portal.
Decode the BH number plate?
BH number plate is similar to normal number plate in form – Black font on white background. But unlike regular license plates, BH license plates start with two digits, followed by BH, then four digits, and then two alphabets.
So for example, if the BH series reads – 21 BH 5555 AA, this means the vehicle is registered in 2021, ‘BH’ is for Bharat, ‘5555’ is the vehicle registration number and ‘AA’ is for vehicle type.
