Did this watch help Max Verstappen win the F1 championship?

To be fair, no one has had a better week than Max Verstappen, who won his first Formula One world drivers championship this week at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. After spending the whole season chasing the newly knighted F1 champion (and Regular Weekday Clock) Sir Lewis Hamilton, the 24-year-old Dutchman finally overcame his opponent in the final round. While Hamilton’s passion for watch collecting is well-documented (thanks to sponsorship from IWC, he runs deep in the pilot’s watch), Verstappen got off to a strong start in the wearables game with a new product TAG Heuer Monaco Titan. Jay-Z, meanwhile, made his mark as a godly watch collector by appearing at a Netflix premiere The harder it is for them to fall most casually wear Expensive Patek Philippe Nautilus ever sold at auction. Also this week, two different answers to the age-old question, “How many watches should I pack for my space travel?”

TAG Heuer Monaco Titan by Max Verstappen

Back in May, TAG Heuer presents Verstappen with this titanium chronograph at the Monaco Grand Prix. He went on to win that race, and the watch seems to have brought him luck ever since. Designed in the 1960s for racers, Monaco is most famous worn by Steve McQueen in the movie Le Mans and is still going strong thanks to a steady stream of aesthetic tweaks and limited editions like this one. I’m not saying watches are magic – but if I were Max Verstappen, I’d never take it off again.

Released in 2012, the 5940 combines a very complicated perpetual calendar movement (a Patek specialty) with an Art Deco-style cushion-shaped rose gold case. Crucially, though, it’s only 8.5mm thick, making it the perfect watch to slip onto the wrist of your favorite suit.

Omega Speedmaster by Yusaku Maezawa — and Richard Mille RM27-02

Speaking of watches and space travel: Japanese billionaire and avid space traveler Yusaku Maezawa faced a similar conundrum during a trip to the International Space Station this week. Finally, Maezawa got on the Russian Soyuz rocket wearing vintage clothes Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch and One Richard Mille RM27-02 Rafael Nadal. While he’s not the first private citizen to visit the ISS, Maezawa really does have the distinction of being the first to wear Richard Mille in space, which is a whole other level of versatility.

Michael Strahan’s Rolex GMT-Master II Watch

You don’t need tons of luggage to fly to the edge of space: the ride on Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket takes about 11 minutes round-trip, and each passenger is allowed 3 pounds of luggage. But that doesn’t stop Good Morning America anchor, watch collection and well-groomed celebrities Michael Strahan from pushing his baggage limit. During last weekend’s spacewalk, Strahan packed no less than three themed matching watches: a sci-fi-looking De Bethune DB28 Kind of Blue Z, a pocket watch from grandfather and a white gold Rolex GMT-Master II with a dial carved from a polished meteorite.
