But what does masculinity mean for Dolce and Gabbana? “Character, charisma, positive values — those have always been the mainstays of our fashion,” they write. “The first glance, if one may call it that, is an example of pure Dolcegabbanism: white briefs and tank top with a gold chain around the neck, nothing more. It’s not a remake, it’s the movies that hit the catwalk in 1990.”
These Reissues, pulled straight from past collections, will come with a special label that identifies the season in which the garment originally appeared. But they make up only one part of the runway show: other highlights include ripped jeans, recreated into patchwork fabrics; clusters of rings on many fingers; and jewel-encrusted rosaries hang from shiny chests that are uncovered or visible through embroidered and semi-transparent shirts. Formal attire includes a lot of white and a lot of black, and oversized pieces of cotton gauze or crumpled technical fabric look undeniably cool, no matter what generation you are from.
The designers write: “Young people appreciate the beauty of dress in a way they did not before. “We see this by casting, working at fashion shows and simply by observing young people who work with us. The jacket will always represent our idea of elegance, which is our symbol, but we still believe that elegance is first and foremost an attitude. ”
During the press conference, Gabbana said that, “Until Beckham, menswear was considered for gays or insiders, and now, thanks to him, it has become for all everyone.” He probably exaggerated, but it would be hard to overstate the impact the athletes, the Beckham chief among them, have had on the world of menswear..
But looking back at past collections is not, after all, an exercise in nostalgia for Dolce and Gabbana. Looking back at the work they have done, they frankly evaluate. They wrote: “We realized we were very good. “We also did a lot of things that were terrible, but some things were really good.”
