Elton John is leaving Twitter due to ‘recent policy change’


Elton John became the latest celebrity to say they’re leaving Twitternext Elon Musktake over the social media platform.

75 year old star announced his departure from the social media platform on Friday, telling his 1.1 million Twitter followers: “All my life I’ve tried to use music to bring people together. However, I am saddened to see how misinformation is currently being used to divide our world.”

He added: “I have decided not to use Twitter anymore, due to their recent policy change that will allow misinformation to grow unchecked.”

CNN has reached out to John’s representative for further comment.

Musk, who has repeatedly questioned Twitter’s commitment to free speech, has made a number of controversial changes to the platform since then. bought it for $44 billion in October. Tesla CEO has faced backlash after initiating mass layoffs, restoring accounts of controversial figures including Former President Donald Trumpand push back the policy of misinformation about Covid-19.

John’s departure comes amid growing concern about an increase in hate speech on Twitter.

Former White Stripes frontman Jack White said last month that he was removing his recording board from the platform, writing in a Instagram post that Musk’s decision to reinstate former President Donald Trump’s account was the final straw.

“The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg announced that she’s “done with Twitter” on an episode of the ABC talk show, after listing all of the controversial announcements Musk has made since the completion of the takeover.
