Although chubby Fretta Frankel of the Northern Hemisphere has ceded both age and experience to her rivals, chubby little Jamie Kah burst onto the scene in an impressive debut victory.
Brought to Sandown on Wednesday for her first outing, Fretta put on a show of class taking the Brick Import Plate (1500m).
A $220,000 worth of UK guineas as a longing, Fretta ($4.20) won by a 3.5-fold margin over Choquant ($4.20) with Hanibal Hero ($21) dollars) in third place.
Kah described the race as ‘messy’ after initial leader Wicasa Tankala veered off course near the 800m mark carrying Choquant.
Ethan Brown on Choquant was able to collect his gel and get him back on track.
Racing Victoria managers said a bit on Wicasa Tankala went through the mouth of that gelding and the six-year-old was hanged very badly.
After a slow start, Kah stuck to the Fretta fence and got a bit lucky on the way home when Roc De Russian darted off the track, opening a run for Fretta.
Kah said: “I was once on this galloping horse and just fell in love with her.
“She’s going to be a star in the future but she’s not quite there yet.
“When she missed the start and didn’t really refocus, I knew she wasn’t going to be speeding, but I really wanted to follow as closely as I could.
“She got up to speed after three stretches and then it was a very messy race with the horses running all over the place and she had to be very skilled and experienced to run when she got there, which she did.
“She came forward pretty early because the horses were rushing out and she had to be brave and strong over the fence, rightfully so.
“She’s still doing a little wrong and wants to run out, but you can’t help but be satisfied with the effort.”
