Exhibition in Japan is ‘between a jet and a fly’

Floyd Mayweather doesn’t take these exhibitions too seriously. He doesn’t have to.

Hall of Famer, 45, is expected to face mixed martial artist Mikuru Asakura in a pay-per-view boxing exhibition Sunday in Saitama, Japan (Saturday in the US).

He was asked at a recent press conference how he prepares for such “battles”. He couldn’t do much.

“We don’t practice as much as we do when we compete,” Mayweather said. “When we compete, we are competing with the biggest and best in the sport of boxing.

“Now let’s do a little bit. We can exercise for a few days, let the body rest for a day, exercise for a few days, let the body rest for a few days. We really don’t practice too much. We are really just traveling and enjoying life.”

In other words, he can dominate warriors like Asakura in his sleep.

“For boxing, to compete at the highest level,” he said, “I’ve been doing it for so long, it’s time to go out and do what needs to be done, I’ve got it done.”

Indeed, Mayweather hopes to bring more than enough into the ring to deal damage against Asakura, stating that this fight is “between a jet and a fly.”

“I know this is just an exhibition match,” he said, “but with one punch of mine, I can assure you his stomach will explode like an eggplant.”

For her part, Asakura said mostly silently to Mayweather through a translator, “You talk a lot.”

Mayweather, whose last sanctioned fight was knocking out Conor McGregor in 2017, has participated in three previous exhibitions. He faced Japanese boxer Tenshin Nasukawa in 2018, YouTuber Logan Paul last year and former partner Don Moore this past May.

And Mayweather said he will probably be in another show before the end of the year.
