‘Extremely worrying’: Nearly 80% of people’s blood may contain microplastics – key risks
Joe Royle, CEO of the group that funded the study, Common Seas, said the study’s findings were “extremely concerning”, adding: “We ate, drank and breathed. by plastic.
“It is located in the deepest sea trench and on Mount Everest. And yet, plastic production is set to double by 2040.”
The results were obtained from the analysis of blood samples from 22 donors, with approximately 17 of the donors having a quantifiable amount of microplastics in their blood.
Samples were tested for five different types of particles, including polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE) and polyethene terephthalate (PET).
