Famine in Somalia: What can be done to stop it? | TV shows

On Thursday, September 22 at 19:30 GMT:
Of the world worst famine in a century The United Nations (UN) has warned about parts of Somalia, and time is running out to save the people there from starvation.

The Horn of Africa is experiencing its fifth consecutive season of drought, most felt in Somalia. There, the UN called at at least 1 billion dollars aid to help the nearly eight million Somalis at risk of starvation in the coming months.

The region has faced similar crises in the past, including 2011, when more than 200,000 yen people die of hunger. But aid groups say the humanitarian situation has never been this dire.

After a recent visit to Mogadishu, UNICEF Regional Deputy Director Rania Dagash says, “I can’t get out of my head the little mounds that mark the graves of children. I’m from this region and I’ve never seen it as bad.” More than 700 children died between January and July 2022, and hundreds of thousands more are still at risk, UNICEF report.

Many supporters added that international help must go beyond immediate financial relief. As the Horn of Africa becomes warmer and drier due to climate change, its people will need sustainable solutions to break the cycle of dependence. They say this can be done by setting up stronger governanceinvest in creativity farming techniques and off-farm job creation.

In this episode of The Stream, we will discuss the famine lurking in the Horn of Africa with a focus on Somalia, and the challenges aid groups are facing and what can be done to help.
