Fat Leonard: Mastermind of Navy bribery scheme arrested in Venezuela after escaping house arrest in San Diego

Pope Francis is currently in the custody of Venezuelan authorities, and US government officials have begun proceedings with Venezuela in an effort to seek extradition, US Undersecretary for Oversight Omar Castillo told CNN on Wednesday. .

US federal law enforcement had previously filed a so-called “Red Notice” with multinational police organization INTERPOL after Francis fled earlier this month, Castillo said. The Red Notice is a global requirement for participating INTERPOL members to temporarily arrest a wanted suspect pending further legal action, such as extradition.

Former contractor escape from house arrest Castillo told CNN at the time in San Diego two weeks ago by cutting off his GPS tracking ankle bracelet.

He escaped just three weeks before being sentenced.

Francis, who was nicknamed “Fat Leonard” from then weighed £400, pleaded guilty to bribery and fraud in 2015.

The investigation into the corruption scandal began in 2013 and involved capitals and ports across the Pacific, including Singapore, Tokyo, Bangkok and Manila. During the investigation, multiple Navy officials were arrested and accused of accepting cash, prostitution, and all-expenses-paid trips in exchange for steering ships to ports where Francis’ contracting company operations, providing services such as fuel and tugboats.
