Former world number three Dominic Thiem has been awarded a spot at the Australian Open Friday, as he continues his return from a serious wrist injury. The Austrian, who pushed Novak Djokovic to five sets in the 2020 Australian Open final, has been sidelined for nine months with injury in the 2021 grass season. He has shown encouraging signs as return to the league, rising from outside the top 350 to 102 in the second half of the year, including semi-finals at Gstaad, Gijon and Antwerp.

His rapid promotion meant the 29-year-old came close to reaching the knockout stages of the main draw of the Australian Open, which kicks off in Melbourne on January 16.

Thiem, two-time French Open runner-up, US Open champion 2020.

Other wildcards belong to American pair Taylor Townsend and Christopher Eubanks, and French players Diane Parry and Luca Van Assche.
