Four people die after grandstand collapses during bullfight in Colombia | News

At least four people were killed and hundreds more injured in central Colombia when part of a wooden stand toppled during a bullfight.

The disaster struck a stadium in the city of El Espinal, Tolima state on Sunday during a traditional event known as “corraleja”, in which members of the public enter the ring to engage the opponents. Bulls.

“We have activated the hospital network in Tolima,” Tolima Governor Jose Ricardo Orozco told local Blu Radio. “Four people have died, so far: two women, a man and a minor.”

Regional health authorities said at a news conference late Sunday that 322 people had gone to local public and private hospitals after the collapse to seek treatment.

Orozco said the death and injury figures are still preliminary. He said he had asked for a halt to the traditional “corralejas” in Tolima earlier on Sunday, after three others were injured in a crash on the corralejas in El Espinal the day before, but the incident has since be held.

The event in El Espinal, which is home to about 78,000 people and is located about 150km (93 miles) from the capital Bogota, is part of a series of celebrations surrounding the San Pedro festival, the most popular festival in the region.

Outgoing President Ivan Duque announced an investigation into the disaster Sunday.

“We lament the terrible tragedy recorded in El Espinal, Tolima, during the festivals of San Pedro and San Juan, with the collapse of the stands during a corraleja festival,” he said on Twitter. “We will call for an investigation.”

President-elect Gustavo Petro urged local officials to ban such events, noting that this is not the first time an incident has occurred.

“I ask the mayors not to let any more events involving the death of a person or an animal occur,” he said.
