India is one of the leading countries in terms of road accidents.
Road and highways union minister Nitin Gadkari said India ranks first in the world in the number of people killed in road accidents on Wednesday. He raised concerns about road accidents while speaking at the Rajya Sabha. The minister said that based on the latest issue of World Road Statistics (WRS) 2018 released by the International Road Federation, India is in third place in terms of number of accidents. He also said that India ranks number one in terms of deaths. Also, India is in third place in terms of number of people injured in road accidents, Gadkari added.
He added that the death rate related to road users aged 18 to 45 is 69.80% for 2020. India is one of the leading countries in terms of road accidents. Every year, the country sees thousands of road accidents, most of which involve two-wheelers. These road accidents result in a large number of deaths, serious injuries or paralysis.
Several reasons are attributed to these accidents. While many accidents are caused by various traffic rule violations, some accidents are caused by technical fault of the vehicle. Some road accidents even happen due to bad road conditions and road design errors.
In an effort to reduce the number of road traffic accidents and related deaths, the Indian government has been focusing on implementing various stringent measures. The government has enacted an amended motor vehicle law that imposes stricter sanctions on traffic rule violations. In addition, the government is focusing on raising awareness among drivers.
