Gloria Estefan Explains Why She’s “Reluctant” To Let Her Daughter Introduce Her Grandmother

Gloria Estefan was very supportive of my daughter Emily Estefan openly gay, but was hesitant about sharing the news with her mother, Gloria Fajardo, before her death.

The Latin pop star explained in a new sit-down interview with CNN‘S Chris Wallace that she thinks Emily being open about her gender with older generations in their family would be too “complicated” for a number of reasons. “In the Latino community, a lot of these topics go unnoticed, they are taboo,” she said. “People see—but they don’t want to talk about it, they don’t want to see it.” Estefan continued, “I think Emily would feel comfortable coming to me.”

In a previous episode of Red Table Talk: The Estefans, the singer also revealed that she “reluctantly had to let her children meet her grandmother” before her death. “We’ve been very, very open about supporting the LGBTQ community throughout our lives, and at the same time, I have a mother with ulcerative colitis that even if I put out a bill—or what that doesn’t even matter—would get very upset. We’re all just families trying to get through tough times in life,” continued the musician. “Life is complicated, life is difficult.” Fajardo died in 2017 at the age of 88.

Estefans’ Facebook Watch program is a by-product of Red table talkMade by Jada Pinkett Smith and Westbrook Studios, and features three generations of women in their families talking to Estefan discussing important issues with her 55-year-old daughter and granddaughter, Lili Estefan. Ahead of the show’s 2020 premiere, the Grammy Award winner said People that she is excited to embark on this new endeavor. “It’s three generations of women with our own views, which might surprise those who think they know what we’re talking about,” she said. “The girls and I will talk about everything from motherhood to spirituality, social media and sex. My daughter Emily was born last year, so I think this is a good topic for families to listen to because sex is a topic they don’t want to discuss.”

And on National Day 2020, Emily shared her gratitude to her partner Gemeny Hernandez above Instagram, posted a picture of two people hugging. She wrote in the caption, “Be friends. Kind. For the better. Be open, be careful if you feel insecure, LOVE. Anything else is freezing… Happy Valentine’s Day… because that should be everything. Only. Day.”
