Two terms that I’m used to, when writing about video games, are “marketing pace” and “work in progress”. They relate to all the allowed, pre-release, preview content I see of new video games. And they help explain why Sunday never existed Grand Theft Auto 6 Leaks will greatly demoralize the industry.
This leak, which includes about an hour of footage in development, is an ongoing process in its most rudimentary form, though without that little disclaimer at the bottom of the screen. And it certainly doesn’t follow some marketers’ plan, which is to bring up a discussion of the features of a big game, to maintain interest (and desire) for a game. from publication to release.
But putting Content they don’t want you to see wild like this is unlikely to be a win for transparency, or any other sublime idea that some people might be trying to pin down, From the looks of it, is an online heist. The truth is that this is just another kind of hype, and like the more conventional hype, we would all do well to lower our expectations.
Obviously, this is incomplete
It’s odd to see comments on Twitter comparing the Vice City environment to Google Earth textures – as both compliment and insult – when everything seen here is a placeholder. Yes, like Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier this summer report, GTA 6 has been in development “in some form” since 2014. But I don’t know what “in some form” really means, and what this game will look like at this point. You have?
Take everything seen at face value: This is visual confirmation of previous rumors. That’s a good thing, this game is Set in Vice Cityand I’m happy to go back there 20 years after playing the original. We also know that developer Rockstar is committed to providing playable female and male protagonists, which is a series first. But there’s a lot we don’t know about Grand Theft Auto 6or the way it was made, much less than what Rockstar expected us to enjoy in it.
You are not getting this game soon
Hacker claims responsibility – who also claims responsibility for hack into Uber’s internal system last week – said it had the game’s source code, and that they cryptically signaled that they wanted to strike a deal with Take-Two/Rockstar.
Publishing the source code for this kind of game is no fun; The closest similarity to this is Half life 2Its source code was stolen and published in October 2003. Fans were able to compile a playable version of the game a year before its November 2004 release.
Not sure if GTA 6 the hacker threat is credible; they appear to have taken most of their assets from the company’s internal Slack messaging system. But they also seem to have access to a lot more in Uber. Either way, it’s unlikely that anything stolen from Rockstar will do much more in the public’s hands than recreating the hilarious rallies seen on Sunday.
And you also get no more information
Remember what I said about the marketing beat? I’ve never seen a leak, no matter how big, that caused a publisher not to talk about a game when they wanted to talk about a game. In 2015, a leaker has given up which Spike Lee directed NBA 2K16The game’s story mode, plus two of the game’s three cover stars. 2K Sports (whose parent company is also Take-Two Interactive) didn’t acknowledge the leak until they made their official announcementaccording to their schedule, a month and a half later.
They’re hardly the only ones sticking to the script. Last week, Capcom finally confirmed launch list of 18 fighters for 6 . street fighter coming out next year, though that was known since the beginning of June. Most of MultiVersus‘list was identified in Marchand WB Games still confirm things at its own pace.
The closest thing you get, maybe, is something like the recent case with Ubisoft, seen Key details about Assassin’s Creed Mirage (including names) leaked via YouTube on August 30 and later partially confirmed them two days latermostly an announcement for a live stream where everything will be revealed.
The point here is that, unlike Rockstar Games who are looking into this leak and are feverishly thinking about how to start the story, as in an episode of West Wing. An ongoing campaign on Reddit, gaming forums or other social media will not pressure the company into making any kind of substantive disclosure or acknowledgment of the leak. beyond what they said.
This will not change the finished product
Despite a leak of an unfinished game, Half-life 2Sales were largely unaffected and, critically, the game became one of the best games of 2004, and one of the best games of all time. Grand Theft Auto is the most valuable franchise in video games today.
While Take-Two Interactive shares fell in pre-market trading on Monday, they have since recovered back to Friday’s close. Reuters, citing Bank of America analysts, said Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to generate bookings (i.e. contract revenue) of $3.5 billion at launch and $2 billion thereafter.
When you’re talking about billions with aB, there’s no denying the few creative choices shown in the leaked videos will change the minds of developers. This isn’t an intentional leak where an imposter could claim to be testing fans’ reactions to a female protagonist or a nicer, gentler GTA. The ship went on top of those design choices. This is something entirely different, and it is not a win for transparency in any sense of the word.
Everyone’s work is happening here
One key point made in this summer’s Bloomberg report is that Rockstar Games, sensitive to its reputation for crunch culture, has stepped back from a more ambitious vision for Grand Theft Auto 6 to provide a base game that can be continuously updated after release.
There’s no doubt that bringing your unfinished business out before the world is torn apart will be demoralizing like hell – I’ve been thinking about how I’d feel if you saw this draft get ripped off. leaks or discussions I’m having with my editors, as benign as all of them.
Are from Red Dead Redemption 2 debuted in 2018, fans spoke up a lot of legitimate concerns for workers to do something on their behalf. In this case, those fans may end up prolonging, or at least endorsing, the damage done to the workplace by investing too much in this leak.
Take-Two Interactive, parent company of Rockstar Games, told investors that it has “taken steps to isolate and prevent this issue.” Increasing workplace security and quality of life have two dots that are not difficult to connect. For example, there might be teleworking policies.
Key point? This leak doesn’t tell us how fast Rockstar Games is currently developing. Nor does it tell us what it feels like to be a woman working in that office. It doesn’t tell us whether anything has actually gotten better. But it can certainly make things worse.
