Hogwarts Legacy – How to Catch Monsters for your Vivarium

The wizarding world is filled with all kinds of magical creatures and, in Hogwarts legacy, you will meet a lot of them. In the end, you’ll unlock the means of taming species found in the wild. Here’s our Hogwarts Heritage Beast guide to help you capture animals for your Vivarium in the Room of Requirement.

Quest required to unlock Vivarium

The mechanics of capturing Vivarium and Beast in the Hogwarts Legacy will be available halfway through the campaign. When you have completed a main quest called The trial of Percival Rackhamanother one will appear:

• The Helm of Urtkot – This will take you to a tomb where you need to solve the Butterfly/Butterfly Door Puzzle.
• The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament – This grants you the Alohomora spell so you can Unlock doors and chests. Likewise, it leads to a side quest that you have to collect deguise moon to upgrade Alohomora.
• Monster Class – This is your first time taking this class. Here you will learn how to pet and feed magical creatures.

Once you have completed the above, you will get a main quest called The Elf, the Nab-Sack and the Loom. This is the part where you are taught how to catch the Beast in the Hogwarts Heritage.

Elf, Nab-Sack and Loom

The house elf Deek will show you the ropes, giving you a spell called Nab-Sack. Here is the gist:

• Think of Nab-Sack like the Proton Pack from Ghostbusters. You approach a creature and fire a beam that pulls them into the Nab-Sack. And, no, it doesn’t work on ghosts in Hogwarts Castle (that would be wrong on so many levels).
• To make things easier, you’ll want to enable stealth with Disillusionment. This prevents animals from detecting your approach. Then cast Levioso on a target to temporarily stop them from moving.
• After you cast your Nab-Sack spell, a prompt button will appear, so make sure to press it. Multiple pips represents the number of times you need to press the button successfully.
• Animals will scatter and run away, so you’ll have to chase them and use Nab-Sack again. If you take too long, the pips will be exhausted and you will have to start over.
• There are cases where animals get too scared and run away or fly away. Simply quickly move them back and forth to make them respawn.

The Elf, Nab-Sack, and Loom quests only require you to deal with tamed pets like Puffskein, Jobberknoll, and Mooncalf. However, there are many more Monsters that you can catch in the Hogwarts Legacy. If you check the map, you’ll see animal paw icons representing Monster Caves of different species. These include rarer creatures like Unicorn and Hippogriff.

After completing your initial objectives, return to the Requirement Room. This is when you unlock the Vivarium in the Hogwarts Legacy, a shelter for all the Monsters you’ve captured.

You can release your captured animals here, but there are a few caveats:

• Each Vivarium contains up to 12 Beasts.
• You are limited to four different species.
• That means you can have 11 Puffskeins and 1 Hippogriff. Also, if you have 1 Puffskein, 1 Jobberknoll, 1 Mooncalf and 1 Hippogriff, you will not be able to add a creature of another species.

Petting and feeding

Now that you’ve got a Vivarium in the Hogwarts Legacy, you’ll be able to pet and feed the animals (similar to what you did in the Beast Class quest). Use your brushes and give them the treatment. This will make them leave feces Materials can be used to upgrade equipment and traits/perks.

Here are some additional details:

• The materials can be purchased from the Brood and Peck shop in the northeast corner of Hogsmeade. This can save you time in case you haven’t encountered some creatures yet.
• The Beast Feeder and Beast Toybox blueprints can also be purchased from the Tomes and Scrolls shop in the southern part of Hogsmeade. You can build these structures in Vivarium using the Evanesco spell.
• A little later in the game you’ll get a quest that allows you to breed animals so they can give birth.
• Additionally, further progress in capturing and taming the Hogwarts Heritage Beasts unlocks additional Vivarium biomes.
