Facing Afghanistan in the final Super 12 match of the 2022 T20 World Cup, Australia can only win 4 matches first, thus reducing the chances of qualifying for the semi-finals. While all hope is not yet over for the Australians, a win for Sri Lanka over England in Group 1’s final match on Saturday is essential to seeing them go through. Glenn Maxwellwho was named Man of the Match against Afghanistan, is hoping the islanders can pull a rabbit out of their hat in the game against England.
Maxwell was finally in top form as he led Australia to a total of 168/8 against Afghanistan on Friday. The Mohammad Nabi-led side took on a great fight but could only get 164/7 in return. The defeat to Afghanistan helped Australia reach the semi-finals, but only slightly.
At the post-match introduction ceremony, Maxwell said: “Afghanistan played really well, they hit the ball very clean. In the beginning, they pressured us in their power play. We were able to hold them back. But then there were some pretty bad plays. It was clean towards the end and it scared us a little bit.”
“It’s great to have an impact on the pitch. I know I won’t have much impact with the ball given the current conditions. Having an impact would be great. During the day it was quite slow and spinning, it was held. It’s a bit hard to hit the point We’ve gotten to around 12th point where we just need to put the sum on the board to make sure we have a chance to win Even though we tried They fought hard, but they bowled really well in the last four rounds.
“They carried out their plan and it was hard to get out. We’ve put ourselves in this situation, but hopefully, Sri Lanka can do the job for us,” he added after the game.
The only way for Australia to join New Zealand in the semi-finals from group 1 is to watch Sri Lanka beat England. If England win, they will advance to the next round thanks to a higher Net Run Rate.
