Horse steals the spotlight at Chanel Fashion Show

Equestrian style has been a staple fashion trend for centuries. What’s not to love the sleek and sexy silhouette of a woman in breeches, turtleneck boots, and a fitted jacket? Both Hermes and Gucci started out making harnesses and horse gear before shifting their focus to human fashion. Think Gucci’s iconic caps on loafers and belts.

Now, Chanel, home of Little Black Dress, has taken on equestrian chic in a big way. At this week’s Paris show, a female jockey and her horse circled the runway in front of a loving crowd to unveil the brand’s spring/summer 2022 collection.

And this is Chanel, not just any of the helmsmen, but 35-year-old Charlotte Casiraghi, granddaughter of Grace Kelly, who became Princess of Monaco. Casiraghi is the Chanel brand ambassador.

Wearing a black tweed Chanel jacket, Casiraghi, who was a top European competitor on the prestigious Global Champions Tour, meanders (!) around a special runway designed by artist Xavier Veilhan at the stunning Grand Palais, where the annual Saut Hermès horse show takes place. As horses and riders circle around the circle, a beautiful film is shown in the background to illustrate the role the horses have played in the history of the brand and the role played by its founder and name, Gabrielle.” Coco” Chanel.

The stunt is part of Chanel’s new artistic vision under Virginie Viard, who replaced the legendary Karl Lagerfeld after his death in 2019.

Clock a video about the creative concept on Chanel’s Instagram account with the caption:

Graphic Resonances based on the ancient relationship between man and horse, skilled equestrian Charlotte Casiraghi brings CHANEL’s equestrian spirit to life, reflecting the horse’s constant symbolism in the life of Gabrielle Chanel and dancers. Xavier Veilhan’s artistic pillar.

In the behind-the-scenes video, Casiraghi is interviewed in French. The driver admitted that she had barely driven in the last three or four years and was very nervous about being able to do what the artist asked of her. But the result is a stunning display of pure showmanship in response to horse races.

The stunt was not controversial, however, with comments on social media criticizing the use of live animals at a fashion show just to entertain attendees.

You can see the whole collection on the official Chanel site, including the film produced for the show.
