IIT Guwahati develops technology to standardize EV batteries and motors for India

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have developed a technology that promises to standardize EV batteries and motors by assessing them against India’s climatic conditions and providing suggestions for EV manufacturers the best powertrain components.

According to the institute, the research aims to create “better and more efficient powertrains based on different regions. This also benefits startups. This study aims to reduce emissions and reduce fuel consumption.” The study states that electric vehicles currently on the market do not take into account the different climatic conditions in India, and the cycles The powertrain was developed with no focus on driving in rural and urban-cycles.

The study was published by the IIT Guwahati Electric Mobility Laboratory led by Professor Praveen Kumar from the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering. His team has developed a method for recommending the best powertrain and drive cycle that is not available anywhere else.

A driving cycle is usually represented by a series of data points representing the vehicle’s speed over time. Driving cycles are created to assess vehicle performance in a variety of ways, including fuel consumption and pollutant emissions.

“Electronic powertrains (groups of components that transmit power to the wheels) developed in wet areas will not perform the same in drier and colder environments. As a result, original equipment manufacturers (OEM) is currently considering creating the standard powertrain, said Praveen Kumar, Professor, Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, IIT Guwahati.

“Currently, there are no OEMs using this technology and they are asking for power cycle data of Indian vehicles. This study hopes to create a better and more efficient powertrain based on it. This also benefits startups. This research aims to reduce emissions and reduce fuel consumption,” added Kumar.

“Our goal was to prepare a document that would enable new entrants to the electric vehicle market and help level the playing field. The other major benefit of this whole exercise is to prepare the next generation of workers. Next tech is ready for an outstanding career in Kumar says.

The institute’s team intends to expand the research to commercial vehicles in partnership with OEMs so that they can produce more efficient driving trains suitable for different climates of India. The researchers are also working on developing the technology for four-wheelers as the project currently focuses on two-wheelers only.
