IIT researchers come up with technology to charge electric vehicles at half the cost of current


The IIT team revealed that one of the country’s leading electric vehicle manufacturers has shown interest in the new EV charging technology.

In an effort to reduce the cost of charging electric vehicles, researchers from different IITs have come up with a new technology that can charge these cars at half the cost of current in-vehicle charging technology. The development of the laboratory scale was carried out at IIT (BHU), Varanasi, in cooperation with experts from IIT Guwahati and IIT Bhubaneshwar.

The IIT team revealed that one of the country’s leading electric vehicle manufacturers has shown interest in the new technology and is looking to develop a full-fledged commercial product based on it, PTI reported. The final technology could then be applied to the EV maker’s existing electric vehicles.

The technology is currently in the stage of upgrading and commercialization is also on the rise. “The rising domestic prices of gasoline and diesel are worrying for ordinary people. In the face of rising costs of petroleum products and pollution levels, electric vehicles (EVs) are an alternative solution. best alternative to conventional IC motors,” Rajeev Kumar Singh, Project Investigator Director, IIT BHU, told PTI.

However, due to the lack of high power off charging infrastructure, various car manufacturers are forced to incorporate built-in chargers into the vehicle, he adds. While EV owners can charge their vehicles through these outlets, this results in a hefty cost. While the new technology reduces an additional power electronic interface required for the propulsion mode, and thus, the components involved are reduced by 50%, the professor explained.

The proposed charger is reconfigurable, which can act as both a charger for charge mode and an inverter for push mode. “Therefore, the cost of the integrated charger will be reduced almost, he added. 40 – 50%.” then also reduce the cost of EV.
