NAGPUR: Fresh after a shocking defeat in the Asian Cup, captain of India Rohit Sharma has casually said he has found the ’90-95%’ core of his team for the World Cup. Just a few weeks later, lively discussions about India’s death bowling are still alive and kicking. India’s derailment in its double death surveillance this month means that the auditions for mortality specialists are going well and indeed going.
The inability to penetrate ahead of Sri Lanka in the Asian Cup and face Australia on Tuesday will force the captain to rethink his ‘prototype’ when time for the World T20 counts.
Australia has announced their arrival in flagship devices in Mohali. To stave off their juggling, the Indian advisory team can go back to their tried-and-tested bowlers – Jasipino Bumrah and Deepak Chaharwho are planning for World T20 – to level the 3-match series at Nagpur’s Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA), Jamtha, on Friday.
The tops are bound to get promoted on game day as both teams had to skip training sessions due to continuous showers on Thursday. However, the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC), Nagpur, did not issue any heavy rainfall warnings for Friday. “During the evening hours, the chance of showers is less. Even if it does, the rainfall won’t last long,” they told TOI.
With international cricket returning to Jamtha after nearly three years, the VCA got rid of the Eden Gardens book by having covers for the entire pitch and a large team (over 80 people in the field) to manage the covers.
Looking at the record in Nagpur, the first team has the advantage. Of the twelve T20I played, nine were won by the batting team first. However, when the earth element comes into play, the chase becomes a bit more difficult.
While the batting is special, the bowling attack of India, no Bumrah and no color Bhuvneshwar Kumar, looks have also run. And when the 200+ were easily conceded like India did in Mohali, the management needed to fix every nut and bolt to prevent leakage of the runs.
Bumrah and Harshal Patel was back from injury and needed game time to start. While Harshal was brought on, Bumrah was benched in the last encounter. India’s bowling will look promising as Bumrah and Harshal will form a four-bowl speed attack. And Australians would be wary of such a contrasting combination. Bumrah’s presence also becomes important considering the weather factor can come into play.
It would be interesting if the management sent another boy home Umesh Yadav, who sold well in Mohali, before Chahar or Bumrah. Chahar scored 6 of 7 runs in T20I 2019 against Bangladesh at Jamtha. This is the second best number in the T20Is.
The way Indian shooters shoot at all types of guns, they will be eager to make it count again. On the other hand, Australians want to continue from where they left off in Mohali. It will get interesting, when India, has the best beaters in the world with Suryakumar Yadav become 3rd in the T20 rankings, will be made to chase.
In that respect, it seems that the team led by Rohit will have an advantage over Jamtha. However, Indian batting has not been as tested under pressure in the recent past as bowling in Bumrah’s absence.
