Coach Cliff Brown hopes to do better in Group 1 Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley

Former Singapore champion The Inferno has had a lot of luck since moving to Australia in early 2021.

The galloper coached by Cliff Brown won Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley last year before coming home late to miss Group 1 Moir . Shares in the same course and distance.

Things haven’t gone well for The Inferno since then, although he finished third in Team 3 DC McKay Stakes at Morphettville in May, his lone spot since last year. Moir.

Inferno returned to the Valley on Friday night to run in Moir Staking and revenge for second place after Wild Ruler.

The sprinter pleased Brown with his comeback, beating 2¼ behind Queenslanders Rothfire and Zoustyle, rivals again Friday night, at McEwen Stakes.

The race didn’t go well for The Inferno despite the small pitch on the track for the leaders.

But Brown says that race serves its purpose because The Inferno has progressed out of the race, though he says sprinters are hard to judge.

“He’s not a great racer so it’s very difficult to get a line to guide him that way,” Brown said.

“You can’t gallop and go ‘gee that’s awesome’. I remember when he won McEwen last year, he was beaten by a 2000 meter horse in a gallop.”

Brown kept The Inferno away from The Valley and the heavyweight track on Monday morning and he was instead allowed to sprint on the track at Mornington.

He said he was grateful to the Melbourne Racing Club for allowing him to gallop on a fundamentally new pitch.

“It was ideal for him,” Brown said.

“I didn’t need to drive to the Valley in a traffic jam and galloped well at him. That is so lovely.

“I think his first run was excellent. It’s always been a tough race, and this is the same, but hopefully they can run a bit because the horse is in good shape.

“But theoretically, his best chance of winning a major race would be at Manikato Stakes.”
