Instagram app is unusable for some people due to instant crash

If you’ve been using Instagram’s Android app for the past hour, you may have noticed that a bug caused the app to hang a few seconds after launch, rendering it nearly unusable. You are not alone: users from many regions have flooded Twitter with complaints about the phenomenon. According to Downdetector, the bug first appeared around 12:44 PM EDT today (September 23) – roughly coinciding with the time when this author also started scratching his head at seemingly random crashes. At the time of this writing, there are still new tweets grumbling about the issue.

A Meta representative confirmed to prominent software engineer Jane Wong that the company is aware of the outage and is working to restore service “as quickly as possible.” While the bug appears to be specific to Instagram’s Android app, Wong told Engadget that the iOS counterpart is also loading very slowly for her, indicating a backend issue.

For now, users who can open the app have noticed limited functionality, including not being able to access Stories or DMs. We will monitor the situation as the service gradually resumes and will update if Meta provides more details on what happened.

Update 9/22/22 2:29 PM EDT: Meta said Instagram was back to normal as of 2:25 PM EDT, though it stopped short of sharing what happened. We’ll share more if we respond.
