Vincy Barretto’s second-half goal helped Chennaiyin FC draw with Kerala Blasters 1-1 and break the five-match winning streak of southern rivals in the Indian Super League on Monday. Sahal Abdul Samad gave the Blasters the lead in the 23rd minute before Barreto returned to score an equalizer against his old club in the 48th minute, however, the Kerala Blasters extended their unbeaten run to six matches to rise to fourth place, ahead of Odisha FC in goal difference and just one point behind ATK Mohun Bagan.
Within a minute, Adrian Luna tried to make a free kick past the keeper from the left, but it was sent over the bar by Debjit Majumder.
Luna repeated the shot he had taken in the first minute from a long-range free-kick.
This time, an attempt to dribble and twist came straight to the keeper from the center of the field before it hit the crossbar again in the 21st minute.
Midway through the first half, Kaliuzhnyi spotted Samad’s pass and made a superb pass that put the ball into the winger’s pass.
Majumder came down in an attempt to close the corner for Samad, but the 25-year-old deftly cut through the keeper to score his third goal of the season.
Three minutes into the second half, first-half substitute Ali was fouled by Vanspaul in the box.
The striker’s first volley was blocked by Prabhsukhan Gill straight into Barretto’s path. From close range, the midfielder scored against his old team.
Blasters will return home to host Odisha FC on Monday.
Chennaiyin FC remains in seventh place, currently four points behind the final playoff spot.
