The man was killed after settlers tried to pitch a tent on private Palestinian land near Salfit in the occupied West Bank.
A Palestinian man has died after he was stabbed by an Israeli settler in the village of Iskaka, in the occupied West Bank region in Central, according to the Palestinian Authority’s Health Ministry, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.
Health officials identified the victim as 27-year-old Ali Hassan Harb, who succumbed to a fatal stab wound to the chest on Tuesday, Palestine’s official Wafa news agency reported.
Local sources said a scuffle broke out after Israeli settlers tried to occupy a plot of land in a Palestinian village by pitching tents on private property.
Harb and other residents intervened, and that’s when an Israeli settler stabbed and killed the young man, the health ministry said in the statement.
Israeli police in the West Bank said they had opened an investigation into the murder. They confirmed that a Palestinian man had been stabbed but claimed it was not clear who carried out the attack.
“Police have arrived at the scene, where an injured Palestinian man was evacuated in a serious condition, apparently from a stab wound,” police quoted doctors as saying, according to the Times of Israel. .
“At this time, the identity of the stabbing remains unclear,” police said. No arrests were made immediately.
Israeli human rights group Yesh Din said in a statement that the man was stabbed by an Israeli settler while he was staying with his family on private land.
“Settlers arrived at the scene and attempted to set up tents. Friction ensued and the settlers left the place. Soon after, soldiers arrived at the scene and then the settlers returned,” Yesh Din said in a statement.
After the settlers returned, violence broke out again, “in which one settler drew a knife and stabbed the young man to death”, the organization said.
Local authorities said Israeli settlers reported being attacked by a group of about 40 Palestinians in the area with stones and sticks.
The vast Israeli settlement of Ariel, south of Nablus, stretched near Iskaka, where the stabbing took place.
Nearly 500,000 Jewish Israeli settlers live in more than 130 scattered settlements across the occupied West Bank, many of which have been completed and now resemble suburbs or small towns. Nearly three million Palestinians live in the West Bank under Israeli military rule.
Yesh Din, who tracks nationalist violence against Jews in the West Bank, said: 91% of police investigations Israeli attacks on Palestinians between 2005 and 2019 were closed without indictment.
An increase in settler violence in recent years, targeting Palestinians and Israeli activists, has often been accompanied by Israeli forces either standing still or actively assisting the settlers.
