Jaime Munguia suggested to play Jermall Charlo for June or July by PBC

Via Jim Calfa: Jaime Munguia has been offered a world championship belt by PBC against WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo in June or July.

No Puedes Jugar Boxeo is reporting that #1 WBC Munguia has been recommended by PBC to beat Charlo.

It’s been a fraught fight for Munguia, who hasn’t looked spectacular in his last two bouts with D’Mitrius Ballard and Gabe Rosado.

Former WBO middleweight champion Munguia (39-0.31 KOs) and those cheering for him at Golden Boy Promotions and Zanfer Boxing Must decide about facing undefeated Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) or potentially going the WBO path and fighting the brutal Golovkin-esque puncher Zhanibek Alimkhanuly for a 160 lb temporary WBO belt.

Munguia vs. Zhanibek has been ordered by the World Boxing Organization, so Jaime must soon make a decision to prevent a purse bid.

It’s very likely Munguia will refuse both his Jermall Charlo title shot and the fight against dangerous Zhanibek (11-0.7 KOs) for the interim WBO middleweight belt.

The fight 25-year-old Munguia and his cheerleaders seem to want most is a title fight against the soon-to-be 40-year-old IBF middleweight champion. Gennadiy Golovkin.

Munguia is going to make a lot of money challenging Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs) for his 160-lb IBF title, and now it’s a no-brainer for him.

It wouldn’t have happened if Munguia fought Golovkin in May 2018 when he was one of the options for his fight in Carson, California.

At the time, Munguia was only 21 years old and had very little experience against world-class opponents. Fortunately for Munguia, the California State Athletic Commission did not approve him as an option for Golovkin’s bout.

Instead, Golovkin went with Vanes Martirosyan, who hadn’t fought in two years and was about to lose to Erislandy Lara in 2016. Golovkin easily defeated Martirosyan by knockout in the second round in a mismatched match.

As for the PBC suggesting Munguia shoot Jermall, it shows they believe this is a winnable fight for Charlo.

Look at it this way. Charlo will be making big bucks fighting Canelo Alvarez in 2023 as part of a two-man fight deal that PBC will offer the Mexican star.

With the money Jermall would make to fight Canelo, he couldn’t afford to wage risky wars against opponents as capable of defeating him as Demetrius Andrade or Zhanibek.

As for the fact that PBC will give Munguia a title against Charlo in June or July, that tells you they don’t appreciate the Mexican slugger as a risk.

Munguia has received a lot of criticism from boxing fans for his slow progress since moving into the 160 lb class in 2020.

Despite offers for a world belt fight with WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade a chance to fight other possible opponents, Munguia has slowed down, fighting five times in the past two years against opponents. This player:

  • D’Mimitrius Ballard – TKO 3
  • Gabe Rosado – 12 years old UD
  • Tureano Johnson – RTD 6
  • Kamil Szeremeta – RTD 6
  • Gary O’Sullivan – TKO 11

Chances are Munguia will decline both bouts with Zhanibek and Charlo, choosing to continue waiting for a big money hit against IBF champion Golovkin.

With any luck, Munguia will face Golovkin in late 2022, possibly in December if he recovers from the September 17 trio against Canelo Alvarez.

Munguia and his supporters at Golden Boy and Zanfer Boxing wouldn’t want to mess things up by going up against Charlo or Zhanibek and getting defeated. It’s unlikely Munguia will beat either of them, as he’s a boxer with limits.
