‘Khalistan referendum’: Canada ties in tailspin, govt issues hate crime advisory | India News

NEW DELHI: With India’s relationship with Canada in trouble because of the latter’s reluctance to check on hate crimes, and the so-called The referendum in Khalistan, the government on Friday asked Indian citizens in Canada, including students and those wishing to travel, to exercise caution and remain vigilant. The government says there has been a sharp increase in hate crimes, sectarian violence and anti-Indian activities in Canada and that the perpetrators have so far not been brought to justice.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs and our high commission/consulate-general in Canada have dealt with these cases with Canadian authorities and have asked them to investigate the aforementioned crimes and take appropriate action. The perpetrators of these crimes have not been brought to justice to date in Canada, said MEA spokesman Arindam Bagchi.
According to the officials, Indian nationals and students from India in Canada and those who are coming to Canada for tourism/increasing education are advised to exercise caution and remain vigilant at all times.
The government also requires Indian citizens and students from India in Canada to register with the High Commission of India in Ottawa or the Consulate General of India in Toronto and Vancouver through their respective websites. or the MADAD portal
“Registration will allow the high commission and the Consulate General to better connect with Indian citizens in Canada in the event of any request or emergency,” it said.
The advice comes a day after India reacted strongly to the “so-called Khalistan referendum” in Canada, saying it was “deeply opposed” that an operation was “politically motivated”. Such of extremists is allowed to take place in a friendly country.
A spokesperson for the MEA said that India has resolved the matter with the Canadian authorities through diplomatic channels and will continue to press Canada on the matter.
