Kobe Bryant jersey sells for record $5.8 million at auction

Kobe Bryant’s iconic jersey from his MVP season sold for $5.8 million on Thursday, setting a new record.
Sotheby said a T-shirt worn by the late basketball star in 25 games of the 2007-2008 season is now the most expensive Kobe Bryant item ever sold at auction and the second most valuable auction shirt ever sold at auction.
The previous sales record for any Kobe Bryant sports memorabilia was set by a signed and in-game basketball jersey from the 1996-1997 season, which sold for $3. 0.7 million USD in 2021.
“With today’s results, Sotheby’s is proud to now hold the record for any in-game sports memorabilia from the basketball trio: Kobe, Jordan and LeBron,” said Brahm Wachter, head of the set. Sotheby’s streetwear and modern collection, said in a statement.
A representative for Sotheby’s declined to comment on the shirt’s purchaser.
This jersey was worn during Bryant’s only MVP season and appears in the image that has become the symbol of the basketball legend, as he grabbed the jersey in excitement after sinking a shot. 3 points in Game 2 of the Western Conference series.
Sotheby’s previous estimate The jersey will sell for between $5 million and $7 million.
Sotheby’s in September sold Michael Jordan’s The 1998 “Last Dance” jersey sold for $10.1 million, a record auction in its own right.
