LEGO has built a life-size replica of the McLaren Formula One race car shown at the recent Australian Grand Prix, McLaren driver Daniel Ricciardo’s home race. The full-sized LEGO Technic model was made with at least 288,315 individual Lego bricks and took a total of 1,893 hours to assemble, CarScoops reported.

Construction was carried out by a team of construction professionals led by Lego Certified Professionals and Lego Masters Australia judge Ryan ‘Brickman’ McNaught. Interestingly, the life-size model is a replica of a McLaren racing car LEGO playset, rather than an actual F1 car. Every LEGO set brick, dowel, and panel has been replicated. This implies that the vehicle is actually a full-size model of the actual vehicle’s scale model.

Key highlights of the full-size model include the moving pistons in the engine, locking the rear differential and the fully detailed steering wheel that actually steers the car. Model complete with knobs, buttons, paddles and display. One missing element is the active suspension, but the car can be easily seated for the driver.

This isn’t the first fully customized vehicle built by LEGO. Over the years, the company has created life-size versions of the Bugatti Chiron, Lamborghini Sian, and McLaren Senna. Not only supercars, LEGO also creates life-size models of Chevy Silverado, Toyota camryand VW Type 2 Bus. The difference, however, is that all of these models are replicas of real cars, not their respective Lego sets. And this makes the latest life-size LEGO McLaren F1 racing model an exception.

The Australian GP circuit has also undergone a number of changes since the pandemic, with the aim of helping race cars run faster and more smoothly.
